The Honourable Dr. Scott Reid, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has announced the following relative to Environmental Assessment – Part 10 – of the Environmental Protection Act.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT SUBMITTED:

Indian Head Hatchery Expansion Project                                           (Reg. 1975)
Proponent: Mowi Canada East Inc.

The proponent is proposing to expand the Indian Head Hatchery in Stephenville to improve quality and increase salmon aquaculture production for the province. On October 25, 2023, the Minister required the proponent to submit an environmental impact statement (EIS) to provide further information on the potential environmental impacts of the project and measures to mitigate them. The minister is seeking public comments on the EIS, which is available on the Department of Environment and Climate Change website at: www.gov.nl.ca/ecc/projects/project-1975/. Printed copies of the EIS will be placed in the Stephenville and Harbour Breton public libraries.

Written comments must be received by July 24, 2025, and may be emailed to EAProjectComments@gov.nl.ca or mailed to:

The minister’s decision on the acceptability of the EIS is due by August 13, 2025.

The project has been released from environmental assessment subject to conditions as outlined in the minister’s decision letter available on the Department of Environment and Climate Change website at: www.gov.nl.ca/ecc/projects/projects-2352/.
