Provincial Government Strengthening Child Protection Legislation Through Public Engagement
June 6, 2025
The Department of Families and Affordability has commenced the review of the Children, Youth and Families Act. This legislation guides the delivery of child protection, in-care, and youth services programs throughout the province.
The Children, Youth and Families Act requires the minister to conduct a review of the Act and the principles on which it is based, every five years, and consider the areas which may be improved.
This statutory review will focus on key policy areas such as child welfare practice with Indigenous children, youth and families, permanency planning for children and youth in need of protection, outcomes for children and youth in care, youth transitioning to adulthood, as well as information sharing in the best interests of children and youth.
A comprehensive public engagement process will provide individuals and stakeholders with the opportunity to provide input on the review of the Children, Youth and Families Act. This process will consist of targeted in-person and virtual dialogue sessions, telephone consultations, and questionnaires.
Beginning June 6, 2025, input can be provided through an online questionnaire at EngageNL and written submissions can be sent to the contact information below:

Quote
“Government is committed to the safety and well-being of children and youth who are, or who may be in need of protection. We recognize the importance of children and youth remaining with their families and are committed to offering services that are designed to maintain, support and preserve a family where it is in the best interests of children and youth. I encourage all individuals to participate in these public engagement opportunities to provide meaningful input on strengthening the Children, Youth and Families Act.”
