FREDERICTON (GNB) – Provincial representatives will join Maliseet communities to celebrate Treaty Day on Saturday, June 4.

“Treaty Day is an opportunity for all New Brunswickers to honour and celebrate the history of our First Nations and the closer relationship we are working to establish between our two levels of government,” said Ed Doherty, minister responsible for aboriginal affairs. “I encourage people from across the province to come to enjoy the celebrations that will be taking place that day.”

Activities will begin at noon at Government House in Fredericton. Lt.-Gov. Jocelyne Roy Vienneau, provincial government representatives and chiefs will gather for a meet-and-greet, followed by a traditional feast. The public is invited to attend and participate.

There will also be a celebration of Mascarene’s Treaty of 1725, signed on June 4, 1726, at Annapolis Royal, N.S.

Treaty Day will conclude with a gala at the University of New Brunswick to raise funds for First Nation education bursaries. The keynote speaker will be famed Inuk singer/songwriter Susan Aglukark.
