Shale Gas Continues to be a Divisive Issue in New Brunswick
January 7, 2015
HALIFAX: In a recent poll asking New Brunswickers their opinions on shale gas, results reveal that residents are just as likely to support as to oppose the exploration and development of shale gas in the province, according to a recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. (CRA). Specifically, four in ten (41%) residents completely or mostly support shale gas exploration and development, while a similar number (45%) completely or mostly oppose, and one in seven (14%) either do not know or do not offer an opinion.
Across the province regionally, residents in Northern New Brunswick and Moncton are more likely to oppose shale gas exploration and development compared with those in the Southern region. Across the population, men and those in the highest household income category are more likely than others to offer their support.
“Shale gas development continues to be a divisive issue in New Brunswick,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates. “Based on the nearly even split in opinion, this issue is one of these ‘can’t win’ political problems dreaded by government.”
These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 400 adult New Brunswickers, conducted from November 6 to November 26, 2014, with overall results accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
