HALIFAX – Canada’s defence minister is warning voters that the next federal election will likely be targeted by online cyber-attacks and fake news as Russia steps up its efforts to undermine western democracies.
Harjit Sajjan made the comment on the weekend while attending a defence and security conference in Halifax.
He says Canada is in Russia’s sights because of this country’s outspoken support for human rights and its vocal opposition to Russian aggression, particularly its annexation of Crimea.
Sajjan says Canada has a cyber-security plan that includes establishing the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security within the Communications Security Establishment _ Canada’s domestic spy agency.
Rose Gottemoeller, deputy-secretary general of NATO, stressed that Russia is not the only country using the internet to spread disinformation.
She says North Korea, China and Iran are also involved in cyber-attacks.
