Woodstock First Nation hosting Indian Summer Games

FREDERICTON (GNB) – Woodstock First Nation is hosting the 2015 New Brunswick Indian Summer Games being held from July 27 to Aug. 1.

“First Nation communities in New Brunswick will come together through sport to celebrate their culture,” said Government Services Minister Ed Doherty, who is also minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs. “I wish all the athletes and coaches the best of luck at the games. I am confident that you will make your families, friends and communities proud.”

Between 1,000 and 1,500 athletes from all 15 Mi’kmaq and Maliseet communities across the province are expected to compete in a variety of sports over the five-day event.

“These games are an excellent way of bringing aboriginal athletes together,” said Doherty. “It is a chance to meet and make new friends from other First Nation communities and I encourage all New Brunswickers to join in the celebrations.”

The games are also an opportunity to celebrate aboriginal culture and heritage as there will be a parade of athletes, traditional colour guards and drumming groups.
