Wait list for affordable housing in Halifax at 4,000, official says – The Chronicle Herald

Affordable housing in Halifax is moving toward a perfect storm, says an official with Housing Nova Scotia.
Studies show that more than 40,000 households in the city — 25 per cent of the total — spend above the recommended 30 per cent of family income on housing. Some are spending as much as half what they earn to keep a roof over their head. And with seniors leaving rural communities for the amenities of the city, the situation is likely to worsen, said Stephan Richard, director of communication and public affairs with Housing Nova Scotia.
“We have quite a ways to go to meet the demand,” he said in a phone interview, adding that the wait list for affordable Halifax housing is at 4,000 and growing. About 2,700 of those on the list are seniors.
