Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has taken the wraps off his party’s plan to protect Canada’s oceans.

He says a federal Liberal government would impose a moratorium on oil tanker traffic along the northern coast of British Columbia.

It’s a move that would effectively mean the controversial 6.5-billion dollar Northern Gateway pipeline is dead in the water.

The Harper government has approved the pipeline which would move Alberta oil to the West Coast, where tankers would take it overseas to Asia-Pacific markets. (20)

N-D-P Leader Tom Mulcair says a New Democrat government would issue an immediate order halting Canadian military involvement in the bombing campaign against the Islamic State.

He would also pull special forces trainers out of the region.

On another matter, Mulcair says he’ll make good on his promise to bring 10-thousand Syrian refugees to Canada before the end of 2015.

He says if elected, he’d resettle the refugees before New Year’s Day. (20)

( Aboriginal-Consultation)

B-C Premier Christy Clark says her government is prepared to negotiate a wide-ranging reconciliation agreement with First Nations in the province.

Clark and members of her cabinet spent the past two days meeting with hundreds of First Nations leaders.

They’ve been working on a deal setting the groundwork for equal partnerships between First Nations and the province.

First Nations leaders warn of court battles and protest camps if the reconciliation issue doesn’t move forward. (20)

(Montreal-Silver-Theft)

Authorities say they’ve recovered about a third of the 10-million dollars worth of silver stolen from the Port of Montreal last week.

Thieves made off with a truck in the city’s west end and drove it to the port.

While the container was found empty on Saturday, the arrest of five men — as well as related raids — allowed authorities to locate some of the booty.

Charges include theft, conspiracy and possession of stolen goods. (20)

(Spielberg-Ford-Holocaust) (125)

An Academy Award-winning director and the head of Ford Motor Company are partnering to expand a multi-media program for Detroit-area students designed to foster tolerance.

Steven Spielberg and Bill Ford made the announcement following a meeting with students and teachers from Henry Ford Academy in Dearborn, Michigan.

Spielberg says he would like to see the program expand across the U-S. (20)

(Zoo-Animal Art)

An auction for 32 colourful paintings produced by elephants, giraffes, river otters and even a cockroach at the Oakland Zoo is underway with more than half a dozen bids on the art work.

Bids start at 200-dollars, and so far, eBay says there are bids on works by a chimp and meerkats, an elephant and lemurs.

But the sun bear is leading the pack with two bids.

The painting sessions were conducted by zoo keepers who used positive reinforcement, including plenty of treats, as they worked with the animals.

Andy the Madagascar hissing cockroach scurried around a canvas, with the result a piece in purple, green and yellow tones. (20)
