Commission urges all levels of government to work together to implement recommendations
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission is making public on Tuesday its final report into the history and legacy of Canada’s residential school system.
The final report, obtained by CBC News a day before its official release, is a detailed account of what happened to indigenous children who were physically and sexually abused in government boarding schools, where an estimated 3,200 children died from tuberculosis, malnutrition and other diseases resulting from poor living conditions.
In an exclusive interview with CBC News Network’s Power & Politics, Justice Murray Sinclair, the chair of the commission, estimates the death toll to be much higher because burial records were “so poor.”
