This is an opportunity for us to see beyond the courtroom’: judges, native leaders meet – The Vanguard
June 10, 2016
MEMBERTOU – Membertou was the location June 9 of a meeting between members of the province’s judiciary and aboriginal community leaders.
The meeting was spearheaded by Associate Chief Justice Lawrence O’Neil of the Supreme Court Family Division, and marked the first time judges have gone directly to an aboriginal community to discuss issues of mutual concern.
Thursday’s meeting focused on the ever-growing numbers of aboriginal children finding themselves being placed in foster care.
It is estimated that in Nova Scotia, some 23 per cent of the children in foster care are of aboriginal heritage, yet the same group only represents six per cent of the child population.
