Five years after winning the Polaris Prize, the singer discusses his new latest attempt to “decolonize” classical music on “Motewolonuwok.”

Jeremy Dutcher is known for his serious and politically searing art, but during a recent photo shoot in Toronto, he radiated a warm, playful charisma. Modelling clothes designed by Indigenous designers and adorned in traditional beading and regalia that he brought from home, he seemed conspicuously at ease dancing his way across the set.

Several hours later, the 33-year-old singer gave me a bear hug before sitting to discuss “Motewolonuwok,” his long-awaited sophomore album, which arrived in October.
