Sydney Ports Corp. hopes to reverse pipeline, sell fuel to ships – The Chronicle Herald

SYDNEY — The Sydney Ports Corp. is still awaiting word on when it will get a second cruise ship berth, but general manager Paul Carrigan says the agency hopes the planned expansion will eventually allow it to sell fuel to ocean-going vessels, creating more business for the port.

Workers are currently conducting maintenance on the Imperial Oil pipeline that moves petroleum products from the marine terminal to the tank farm in Sydney’s north end. Carrigan said Friday it may be possible to reverse the pipeline and make fuel available to other vessels, including cruise ships heading to Europe.

“We’re hoping that down the road we can also reverse it and fuel bunker vessels,” he said. “With the second berth there’s potential, if Imperial Oil continues to own it and continues to operate it.
