CHARLOTTETOWN – Suicide and poor housing are two of the biggest issues facing aboriginal youth today, says an indigenous leader from Charlottetown.
Jenna Burke, a fourth-year political science student at UPEI, who is also involved in the Mawi’omi Aboriginal Student Centre on campus, was one of 12 young Indigenous Canadians who addressed the Senate last week.
“I think suicide would be the biggest one,’’ Burke told The Guardian when asked what are the challenges. “I know even in the Mi’kmaq nation when a suicide happens in one place it really affects the community everywhere.
“The community grieves no matter where they are from. It’s such a close-knit community.’’
