Julia Wabie grew up around women of distinction. On Wednesday, she was recognized as one herself.
Wabie, who hails from Wolf Lake First Nation, joined Lynn Despatie as one of two Young Women of Distinction award recipients named by YWCA Sudbury during a press conference at the Steelworkers Hall in Sudbury.
YWCA also announced Women of Distinction recipients Mellaney Dahl, Justice Patricia Hennessy, Lise Plante and Alicia Woods, as well as Group Women of Distinction recipients Sudbury Soup Sisters and Brother Brothers.
All will be feted during the YWCA’s 10th annual Women of Distinction Awards Gala, to he held at the Steelworkers Hall on April 30.
“I’m really excited,” Wabie said with a smile. “It’s such a prestigious award. My mom has been one of the board members here for a long time and I have gotten to know everybody here. I’m really excited to be receiving the award, as opposed to sitting on the sidelines and watching and being proud of the people getting the awards. It’s kind of shocking that I would be up there, because I never expected it.”
