Statement by Premier Dennis King on Mi’kmaq History Month
Hon. Dennis King, Premier of Prince Edward Island issued the following statement:
“October is Mi’kmaq History Month. It is an opportunity to learn more about and celebrate the Mi’kmaq people of Prince Edward Island.
The Government of PEI is committed to supporting the Mi’kmaq people and working together to advance reconciliation. It is important that we acknowledge the effects that colonization, assimilation, institutionalization and discrimination had, and still has on all Indigenous peoples living in PEI and throughout Canada.
Throughout October, the Indigenous Relations Secretariat will offer a series of lunch and learn sessions by Mi’kmaq presenters to public service employees every Wednesday so they can learn more about the history, culture, and language of Mi’kmaq people.
I encourage all Islanders to take the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Mi’kmaq, their heritage and their traditions during this month.”
