REVIEW: Truth and Reconciliation seen in action as Nsituninal: Our Voices allows Indigenous women from N.L.’s history to speak out – Saltwire
As the lights dimmed and the whispers in the audience faded away, the sound of someone throat singing began to reverberate off the walls of the theatre.
The throat singing grew more intense as two shadowy figures moved to centre stage.
Writer and stage director Leahdawn Helena, music director Deantha Edmunds, and movement director Phoebe Skinner-Gill collaborated to create a performance that seamlessly intertwined movement, music, and acting, breathing new life into a rarely taught story of our past in the first performance of Nsituninal: Our Voices in St. John’s.
Right from the beginning, the audience was captivated by the beautiful harmony of Edmunds and her daughter, Annabelle Edmunds-Ramsay, as they introduced us to the story through song.
