The Provincial Government is joining groups, schools and communities around the province to mark Pride Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the diversity and acceptance of 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

Events in Newfoundland and Labrador are being held throughout the summer.

At the Confederation Building in St. John’s, the rainbow flag, a well-known symbol associated with gender and sexual diversity, flies on the courtesy flagpole, and the building is lit up nightly in the colours of the rainbow. As well, four new rainbow crosswalks are in place and in the next few days rainbow benches will be placed on the grounds.

In April 2021, Premier Andrew Furey created the Office of Women and Gender Equality with a commitment to working with the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community to ensure Newfoundland and Labrador is a safe, accessible and inclusive place for people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.

Quotes

“I join Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in celebrating Pride Month. This annual occasion reminds us about the importance of continuously respecting the diversity of all residents and working to uphold the rights of 2SLGBTQQIA+ people to live free of violence and discrimination. The Pride flag flies proudly today at Confederation Building.”

Honourable Andrew Furey
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“I am honoured to be the first minister to have gender equality officially recognized as part of my portfolio. Acknowledging the work that has gone before us, we will continue to make strides in partnership with stakeholders to bring about gender equality and inclusion for the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community in our province.”

Honourable Pam Parsons
Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality
