RCMP – National Aboriginal Day, June 21st, 2015

by ahnationtalk on June 19, 2015676 Views

June 21st of each year marks Aboriginal Day, a celebration of Canada’s Aboriginal culture and tradition. This is an important day for the RCMP given our significant relationship with the country’s Aboriginal communities we serve, and the role Aboriginal people play within the force itself. Did you know…

  • The RCMP’s workforce has over 1,900 Aboriginal employees in a variety of positions, including 1,500 police officers?
  • Our history of service to First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities goes back to the early days of the Northwest Mounted Police in the 1870s?
  • Our detachments serve more than 600 Aboriginal communities across Canada?
  • Contributing to safer and healthier Aboriginal communities is one of the RCMP’s five strategic priorities.
  • We work closely with our Aboriginal communities to develop innovative and culturally competent policing approaches and initiatives that address local priorities.
  • The RCMP’s National Aboriginal Policing Services (NAPS) is responsible for working with Aboriginal groups in the planning, developing and managing these initiatives.

We are proud of the relationship we’ve build with our Aboriginal communities, and committed to strengthening it even further in years to come. We urge you to take part in the many events happening throughout Canada to mark National Aboriginal Day, and learn more about the unique culture of our partners, colleagues and friends.
