Premier applauds investment in refinery
August 20, 2015
SAINT JOHN (GNB) – Premier Brian Gallant is applauding today’s announcement of a $200 million investment in the Irving Oil refinery.
“Our government has been working to create the right conditions for businesses to grow, invest and create jobs here in New Brunswick,” said Gallant. “We welcome this major private-sector investment as it supports our priority of growing the economy and creating jobs.”
Gallant said the investment will create $27 million in direct spinoff benefits for Saint John and nearly 3,000 jobs.
“The energy sector is crucial to the City of Saint John and the province’s economy,” said Gallant. “That is why we are very strong proponents of major energy projects including the Energy East pipeline and the potential conversion of the Canaport LNG terminal for export. With the Irving oil refinery, we now have the most sophisticated facility in the country and we have an experienced workforce. We want to build on those things that make us a leader in the energy sector to grow the economy.”
Beginning in September, workers in the skilled trades will perform scheduled maintenance and upgrades at the Saint John refinery for about eight weeks. Work will be underway 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until the project is completed. The majority of workers will be from New Brunswick.
