A former Manitoba cabinet minister who questioned Premier Greg Selinger’s leadership wants to run for the federal New Democrats.

An N-D-P source tells The Canadian Press that Erin Selby will announce tommorrow that she is seeking the party nomination in the riding of St. Boniface-St. Vital.

Selby said last month that she was eyeing the move after a leadership crisis that left the Manitoba N-D-P government divided.

She was the province’s health minister until last fall, when she and four other senior ministers called on Selinger to resign to help the N-D-P win the next election. Selinger survived a leadership contest in March by 33 votes. (The Canadian Press)

(Mba-Grand-Chief)

First Nations leaders in northern Manitoba have elected former C-T-V reporter Sheila North Wilson as the new Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak grand chief.

Chiefs and councillors of 30 First Nations voted earlier this week in Nelson House.

North Wilson is from the Bunibonibee Cree Nation. She beat William Elvis Thomas of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in a second ballot after Tyler Duncan of Norway House Cree Nation withdrew.

Incumbent David Harper, who is chief of the Garden Hill Cree Nation, finished last after a first ballot of voting; he was seeking a third term. (CTV Winnipeg)

A First Nation challenging a federal law that requires Indian bands to make their finances public says it is seeking help from the United Nations.

The Onion Lake Cree Nation’s case against the transparency legislation was heard in Saskatoon Federal Court last month, and a decision is pending.

The band contends the law violates treaty rights and that Ottawa has wrongfully cut non-essential funding to First Nations that have not complied.

The other reserves in the case are the Sawridge and Athabasca Chipewyan First Nations in Alberta and the Thunderchild and Ochapowace bands in Saskatchewan. (The Canadian Press)

(Sask-Insurance)

Saskatchewan’s Crown insurance company is introducing a program that allows drivers to get vehicle damage estimates at accredited auto body shops.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance says the move will streamline smaller damage claims.

Don McMorris, minister responsible for the insurer, says it will reduce wait times as well.

Vehicles will no longer have to be taken to S-G-I appraisers before being sent for repairs. (CKRM)

(Alta-Dog-Bite-Charges)

Two people have been charged after a child was bitten by a dog in Calgary.

The person in care of the dog and the dog owner have been charged under Calgary’s animal bylaws with causing severe injury and having an unlicensed dog.

The dog is in custody of animal and bylaw services where it will undergo a behavioural assessment following a 10-day quarantine.

A little boy was taken to hospital Tuesday with severe facial injuries after being attacked by the dog in a home in the Ranchlands neighbourhood. (The Canadian Press)

Voters in northwest Calgary go to the polls today in a hotly contested provincial byelection.

The Calgary-Foothills seat has been held by the Conservatives since 1971.

Former Tory premier Jim Prentice won the riding in this year’s provincial election, but quit politics that same night after the New Democrats swept the P-Cs from power in the province.

Now political observers and polls are suggesting it’s a three-way race among the governing N-D-P, the Opposition Wildrose and the Progressive Conservatives. (The Canadian Press)
