Comedy play takes to the stage this week in central Labrador
Why is the Puddle family cursed?

That’s what theatre-goers will find out this week when ‘Our Ancient Family’ takes to the stage in central Labrador starting this Friday. (See showtimes and locations at end of story).

Written and directed by award-winning director Jamie Skidmore, Our Ancient Family is a comedic play that begins in modern day Goose Bay, and travels through time along the southern coast of Labrador as it retells the story of the Puddle family curse.

The Puddles are a family from the South Coast of Labrador with Southern Inuit ancestry on the maternal side and British ancestry on the paternal side. At the beginning of the play, Nance is visited by her two cousins Brian and Matthew, and Matthew’s girlfriend, Leila. Matthew is confused why his Nan is the one who hunts seal in the family, so Nance tells him the history of the family. They pull out an old tickle trunk and the four young people take on all of the roles from their family history. They begin in Chateau Bay in 1765, at the site of the Inuit-British Treaty agreement, where their great-Nan meets their great-Pop …and the family curse begins. They travel through time to just outside of Cartwright in 1892, where they hope the family curse will finally be ended.
