NunatuKavut contributing up to $10,000 to Labrador Winter Games
January 25, 2016
The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) today announced funding totalling up to $10,000 for registered NCC communities taking part in the Labrador Winter Games. The Games are hosted by Happy Valley Goose Bay and will take place in the Lake Melville Area from March 13-19, 2016.
Each eligible community team in south-east, central and western Labrador will receive $500 for costs related to their participation in the Games. In 2013, NCC contributed $250 per team.
“We are happy to be doubling our contribution for the 2016 Games,” said Todd Russell, President of the NCC. “We hope this helps encourage and increase participation from our communities.”
The Labrador Winter Games organizes a variety of competitions, many of which promote Labrador’s unique culture and heritage. Some of the more traditional events include the Labrathon, the Northern Games and the Dog Team Race.
“The Games provides an incredible opportunity for all Labradorians to showcase some of our traditions that has been carried on through many generations,” said President Russell. “No other sporting event in Labrador unites all of our communities and instills such a strong sense of pride in who we are like this one.”
Nunacor, NCC’s economic development corporation, also made a significant contribution to the Labrador Winter Games and is a gold sponsor.
“We are proud to support the athletes and all those involved in the Games,” said Andy Turnbull, Nunacor’s
Chief Executive Officer. “This long-standing event is an excellent opportunity for all of our communities to come together to celebrate our culture as well as showcase our athletic abilities.”
NCC is committed to the health and well-being of its communities and supports various community service organizations and events.
