Nunatsiavut mourns loss of former chief elder
Nunatsiavut President Sarah Leo today extended her condolences to the family and friends of former Nain Moravian Church chief elder, David Harris Sr.
“Mr. Harris was a very well respected member of his community of Nain and garnered the respect of people throughout Nunatsiavut and beyond,” says President Leo. “He had the ability to put things into perspective with a sense of proportion, and was often called upon for advice, guidance and support.”
Mr. Harris was an active member of the church where he was the chief elder for 25 years and organist for some 60 years. He also served as choir master and devoted countless hours to serving his community.
“David had great strength of character, compassion and commitment to the people. He also had a great sense of humor, which he shared mostly with those close to him.” adds President Leo. “He placed others ahead of himself. He devoted much of his time to the church and congregation. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.”
Mr. Harris passed away Sunday evening in Nain, surrounded by family and friends. He was 79.
He is survived by Alice, his wife of 57 years, five children, 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in Nain on Wednesday.
