October is National Foster Families Month, and the Nunatsiavut Government would like to shine a spotlight on foster parents and families in the five Labrador Inuit communities and Upper Lake Melville.

This year’s theme, Foster Families: Nurturing Hearts and Strengthening Families, is fitting as we recognize that foster parents in our region help to keep our children connected to their family, community and culture. The encouraging contributions of our foster parents have positive long-term impacts on a child’s life. The Nunatsiavut Government sincerely appreciates and thanks our foster parents for the commitment and dedication they provide to our young people.

In partnership with the provincial Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development, the Nunatsiavut Government has hosted foster parent appreciation events (by invitation only) in each Inuit community. An event in Happy Valley Goose-Bay will occur this week.

The Nunatsiavut Government aims to support and recruit new Labrador Inuit foster families through the Caring for our Children Project, a supportive service available in the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area and Upper Lake Melville. To learn more about this program, or if you are interested in becoming a foster parent, please contact Kerry Davis (896-5828) and/or Jade Pilgrim (896-6764).
