Nova Scotians now have access to free online training to identify and respond to sexual exploitation of children and youth.

This is the eighth module released as part of the course Supporting Survivors of Sexual Violence: A Nova Scotia Resource. The course includes information on ways to offer support and options for people, without judgment.

“Anyone can be subjected to sexual violence, although we do know that young Nova Scotians and those from marginalized communities are more likely to be targeted,” said Kelly Regan, Minister of Community Services. “Being aware of child sexual exploitation and human trafficking, knowing what to look for and how to respond is an important part of ending the violence and supporting survivors.”

The training is for service providers, friends, parents, family members, neighbours, teachers, first responders, counsellors and anyone who is acting as a support person or is concerned about sexual violence.

Other topics in the online course include an introduction to sexual violence, responding to a disclosure, choices following sexual violence, exploring sexual consent, enhancing the well-being of support people, Indigenous perspectives and African Nova Scotian perspectives.

Quotes:

I am proud to be a part of the new training. The explanations and videos were very thorough and shot really well. I’m looking forward to community feedback because it really hits home and spells things out clearly. Jade Brooks, author, The Teen Sex Trade: My Story

YWCA Halifax and our partners were honoured to be included in the development of this new resource for Nova Scotians wanting to learn more about the sexual exploitation of children and youth. Education and awareness are keys to prevention. This training is an excellent way for community members to learn about risk, warning signs and the prevalence of this important issue in Nova Scotia. Miia Suokonautio, executive director, YWCA Halifax
