Today, the Honourable Pam Parsons, Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality, was joined by members of St. John’s Pride at a flag-raising ceremony at Confederation Building to mark Pride Week 2021.

Pride Week celebrates the important gains made by and for the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community while raising awareness that more must be done to prevent discrimination and advance equality.

Just last month, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador made changes to the Vital Statistics Act, 2009 to allow residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who were not born in the province – but have lived here for at least three months – to change their sex designation. The amendments align with other changes made to the Vital Statistics Act to recognize diversity and allow for a change of sex designation on a birth certificate from female or male to a non-binary option.

St. John’s Pride Week features a variety of events including drag shows, yoga, and performances by the St. John’s Gay Men’s Chorus. This year’s theme is ‘Stay Safe. Stay Proud.’ Complete details on Pride Week in St. John’s can be found at www.stjohnspride.ca.

Quote
“Our government values equality and respect for the diversity of all individuals. Pride Week is an opportunity to encourage acceptance of all persons living in Newfoundland and Labrador. Everyone has a right to be respected, included and treated equally. Regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, race, or religion, we all deserve to feel safe, and proud. We raise the Pride flag to celebrate the diversity of our communities.”
Honourable Pam Parsons
Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality
