Band developed legislation to focus on children during three-year process
Membertou First Nation in Nova Scotia made history over the weekend by passing a new family homes law — the first law created and passed by the community.
“We are very pleased,” said Chief Terry Paul. “This law is the first one that was created by us — for us.”
The Membertou Family Homes Law was developed over three years by the band following consultation with the community. It determines how the interests of an individually-owned home in the community get divided in cases of divorce, separation or death.
