Oceans North (an oceans conservation organization), boat builders, and policy makers are working with Membertou to aid in an emission free fishery industry. The goal is to reach this milestone before 2050 for the safety of marine life, including lobsters that may become susceptible to disease and possible infertility.

Hubert Nicholas, director of Membertou Fisheries, is working towards an Emissions Free Fishing Fleet. Nicholas said that “there are barriers to do this, however, Membertou has already overcome many barriers,” and is now gathering data from Membertou fishing boats in hopes of “electrifying these vessels” in the future.

Nicholas said that we need to “better manage fisheries and better manage the ecosystem because our communities depend on the income and on the jobs [in the fishing industry].”
