Tuesday marks final day of hearings in New Brunswick for panel examining proposed Energy East pipeline
The six Maliseet First Nations will make presentations on Tuesday as the National Energy Board wraps up the New Brunswick-based public hearings on the proposed Energy East pipeline.
During the first three days of hearings last week in Saint John, several Mi`kmaq First Nations and groups, including Esgenoôpetitj First Nation Chief Alvery Paul appeared as interveners and questioned officials from TransCanada Corp. about whether the company recognized the need for consent from them to proceed with the pipeline.
First Nations in the Maritimes signed peace and friendship treaties with European settlers, but never ceded their lands to the Crown, as happened in other parts of Canada.
