Local and International Groups Gather to Talk About Water Justice

  1. JOHN’S, NL: The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC), an umbrella organization with more than 70 members across the Atlantic, will be holding its annual Symposium this year in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The event titled “Sacred Waters: The future of human cultures and livelihoods in a sea of change”, will take place Thursday, June 11, 2015 until Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

The 2015 Symposium will bring together international cooperation practitioners, youth, civil society leaders, issue-specific experts, advocates and academics to increase dialogue and make connections between the issues and the actions necessary to create a sustainable future, both locally and globally.

“We are excited to be hosting our symposium in St. John’s this year,” says ACIC Acting Executive Director Carolyn Whiteway. “The theme has special significance, given the important role that oceans and fisheries has in the

Atlantic region. The opportunity to bring people together ‘from the Gambia to Goulds’ to discuss water issues and their global impacts is undoubtedly something that will spark remarkable discussion and perhaps lead to creative solutions and innovative ways forward.”

This year’s keynote speaker, Barbara Neis, will be relating her knowledge from a seven-year research program in Western Newfoundland as well as projects in Southern Africa and Asia to explore lessons learned about the challenges and opportunities associated with rebuilding fisheries and coastal communities. Other special guests include Abdou Kanteh, Sharmane Allen and Chief Mi’sel Joe, who will be participating in the panel discussion titled “Water Justice: Impacts on human cultures, livelihoods and community development.”

The symposium will also be an opportunity to celebrate ACIC’s 40th Anniversary and to create constructive dialogue about where the organization has been in previous years and where it will be going in the future.
