FREDERICTON – Louise Imbeault was installed as the 33rd lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick at an official ceremony in Fredericton today.

Premier Susan Holt said Imbeault, as a former journalist and advocate for women’s rights, Acadian culture, the arts and Indigenous Peoples, brings a wealth of knowledge to the table.

“Ms. Imbeault has always been passionate about helping her community,” said Holt. “I’m looking forward to working with her to serve New Brunswickers. On behalf of all New Brunswickers, I want to welcome her and wish her all the best as she gets started in this new and exciting role.”

“As a proud New Brunswicker and Acadian, it is an incredible honour for me to be assuming this position,” said Imbeault. “In this new role, I will strive to bring different cultural communities together, promote social justice and honour our treaty obligations, while working towards the elimination of systemic inequalities. Over the next few years, I look forward to meeting New Brunswickers from across the province to celebrate their remarkable achievements.”

Imbeault had an award-winning career in journalism for over 40 years, retiring in 2011. Since 2018, she has been chancellor of the University of Moncton. She has received many awards for her dedication to the community, which include the Order of Moncton, the Order of New Brunswick and the Order of Canada. In 2010, she received the Prix Albert Sormany from the Société de l’Acadie du Nouveau-Brunswick for her contributions to Acadian culture. She was also appointed an officer of the Ordre national du mérite (national order of merit) of France.

Imbeault succeeds Brenda L. Murphy, who became the 32nd lieutenant-governor in September 2019.
