Labrador Schools Case An Early Test Of Trudeau Government’s Commitments – Ches Crosbie

As the Labrador Residential Schools class action trial enters its third month at the court house in St. John’s, it is being viewed by national observers including the Globe & Mail as an early test of the Liberal government’s commitment to a new relationship with the indigenous Canadians: November 17, 2015, “Justice Minister to review Residential School settlement.”

The Federal government has never made a settlement offer in the case.

All indicators point to the conclusion that the new national government elected on October 19 intends to make a serious attempt to settle the class action.

  • The now-governing Liberal party’s election platform included a commitment to implement all of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which includes a recommendation that the federal government “work collaboratively” to have residential school claims such as the Labrador claim “determined expeditiously”
  • An aboriginal activist from British Columbia, Jody Wilson-Raybould, was appointed Justice Minister, and she has said she is taking a close look at Ottawa’s decision to exclude Newfoundland and Labrador from the otherwise national apology and financial settlement
