Labrador MHA Criticizes Lack of Progress on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Report – VOCM

The NDP MHA for Torngat Mountains says she is “deeply disappointed” that, five years after the release of the national report into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, only two of its 231 calls for justice have been completed.

Lela Evans says the report outlines what Canada must do to end what she calls the “genocide” against Indigenous women, girls, and members of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community.

She believes that the federal and provincial governments are talking about reconciliation, but are failing to live up to their obligations outlined in the report, which she calls an “essential legal obligation” of all levels of government.

In her district, Evans says they are seeing harm being caused by a lack of government support, which is evident through the cost of food, housing, and fuel, as well as their high suicide rates.
