July 11, 2016:

This summer, children in community centres, Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) campuses, and First Nations communities will participate in Shipbuilding Summer Camps. The six camps are supported by the Irving Shipbuilding Centre of Excellence, a partnership of Irving Shipbuilding and NSCC. The program is being delivered by SuperNOVA at Dalhousie University.

The hope is not only for an enriching summer experience but also to spark interest in possible future shipbuilders of Nova Scotia!

“We are very excited to be partnering with Irving Shipbuilding and NSCC to provide this program,” said Alexandra Fenton, Director of SuperNOVA at Dalhousie University. “It’s a great opportunity to connect kids to science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and trades within the context of this important Nova Scotian industry. Not only are these programs fun and hands-on, but they also help reinforce positive attitudes about STEM and skilled trades that could help to shape the future careers of Nova Scotian kids.”

Kurtis Greco, Shipbuiling Specialist at the Halifax Shipyard says the activities are designed to be fun and enriching. “To introduce the kids to skilled trades in a simple way, we task students with making a simple electric circuit,” Greco said. “The circuit, equipped with a switch, resistor and LED light, are then used to produce Morse code. Students are then able to decipher Morse code. This activity is a camp favourite, the kids always enjoy it.”

Upcoming camps:

Mulgrave Park July 11-15
Sipekne’katik First Nation July 18-22
NSCC Akerley August 2-5
Membertou First Nation August 8-12
NSCC Strait Area August 22-26
