Information for Registered Participants of To Light The Fire

by ahnationtalk on November 6, 2015606 Views

We look forward to seeing you soon in Happy Valley-Goose Bay for Newfoundland and Labrador’s first-ever indigenous arts symposium, To Light The Fire, from November 19-22, 2015. We would like to share some information and calls for participation with you as we get closer to the symposium.

Call for Film Night Submissions

Registered participants can submit films they have produced, directed, or written to be screened on Friday, November 20 during a mini indigenous arts film festival. Films must be focused on indigenous subject matter or have been made by indigenous artists to be considered. The film lineup will last 2 hours, so not all films submitted will be screened. Interested people can forward their film information to Joshua Jamieson (jjamieson@nlac.ca) with details including the name of the director, writer, and producer, the film title, running time, and a brief 2 to 3 sentence summary by Monday, November 9. Preferred playback will be from a digital file, with a back up DVD.

Call for Symposium Art Exhibition Participants

Registered participants who are visual artists that would like to have some of their professional artwork included in a symposium exhibition at Hotel North should let Donna Roberts (droberts@nlac.ca) know by Monday, November 9. Please provide photos of the pieces you would like to display (no more than six). Also include a résumé, artistic résumé, and a short biography no more than 200 words long. As space will be limited, not all submitted pieces or artists responding to this call will necessarily be included in the exhibition. Transportation of the artwork is the sole responsibility of the artist. The exhibition will be curated, and the curator will determine the overall display of the selected pieces.

Pop Up Shop Set Up Information

Registered participants who are professional artists that have works, pieces, or product available for sale are invited to take part in the pop up shops. If this applies to you, contact Donna Roberts (droberts@nlac.ca) to let her know you’re interested. Those taking part as a pop up shop merchant will be able to set up their display/shop on tables available upstairs at Hotel North on Friday, November 20 between 3:00pm and 5:00pm. Pop up shops will be open to registered participants of the symposium in the evening from 5:00pm onwards, on Friday and Saturday evening. Artists/merchants will be responsible for their own direct sales, which will be cash only (unless the artist is able to accept other payment methods through something like Square – http://squareup.com). ATMs are on site at Hotel North and nearby but they will have limited funds in them.

Hotel Incidentals & General Information

For participants whose hotel accommodations are being covered, Hotel North will require a credit card to be left on file at check-in for any incidentals. The card will only be charged in the event that incidental related charges are incurred, otherwise there will be no charge. If you can’t leave a credit card on file with the hotel, you will have to leave a $200 deposit by debit or in cash at check in.

The hotel does provide free Wi-Fi.

The symposium will be a scent free event. Please be considerate, and do not wear perfumes, colognes, or highly scented products while attending.

If you wish to take photos, ensure that you ask the artist or those being photographed for permission.
