Indigenous economy worth $1.1 billion in Atlantic Canada, study finds – The Chronicle Herald

HALIFAX — A newly released study says Atlantic Canada’s economy is bolstered by $1.14 billion in business and household spending from the region’s indigenous community.

The study says the indigenous economy creates more than 16,700 full time equivalent employment positions and contributes $184.5 million in overall tax revenues.

Study co-chair John G. Paul says the study shows indigenous communities are significant contributors to the region’s economy.

Paul says given the indigenous population is the fastest growing and youngest in Canada, aboriginal communities are looking for innovative ways to grow the economy.
