Long before it was commonplace for pop stars to have alter egos and wild outfits, there was David Bowie.
The Brit set the music world on its ear with the 1972 “Ziggy Stardust and Spiders from Mars” album — and gave it one of music’s most famous personas.
David Bowie died of cancer yesterday, surrounded by his family, at age 69.
British Prime Minister David Cameron has tweeted that Bowie was a “master of reinvention” and a pop genius. (4)

(NL-Flight-Diverted)
A 35-year-old Israeli man is due in a St. John’s, Newfoundland courtroom this morning accused of disrupting an Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna flight to New York.
Police were called to the St. John’s International Airport yesterday after the flight was to diverted there.
The man was removed from the plane and taken to hospital to be seen by a doctor.
He’s facing several charges, including causing a disturbance and uttering threats. (4)

An inquest resumes in Thunder Bay, Ontario today into the deaths of seven First Nations high school students.
It will be closely watched by aboriginal leaders who want to know how the deaths were investigated.
Alvin Fiddler, grand chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, says there are strong parallels to the issue of missing and murdered indigenous females — including racism experienced by the students, and how slow authorities were to launch a full-scale search for the students.
The deaths between 2000 and 2011 happened while the students were attending schools in Thunder Bay, away from their First Nations communities. (4)

It’s not clear yet what sparked a house fire in northern Winnipeg that sent nine people — including six children — to hospital.
Firefighters say everyone got out of the house, which was gutted early yesterday.
All nine of the injured were treated for smoke inhalation. (4)

(Baltimore-Police-Freddie-Gray)
Another trial begins today in Baltimore in the case of Freddie Gray, a young black man who died after he broke his neck while in police custody last April.
Police van driver Caesar Goodson was with Gray on his 45-minute trip from the scene of his arrest to the police station, where Gray arrived badly injured.
Goodson faces the most serious charge of all six officers — second-degree “depraved-heart” murder. (4)

(El-Chapo)
Mexico has begun the process of extraditing Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman to the United States, after the notorious drug lord was recaptured following a six-month manhunt.
But officials warn the process could take a long time.
Guzman’s lawyers are filing legal appeals to try to keep their client in Mexico, where he has twice escaped from maximum security prisons. (4)
