First Nations Financial Transparency Act requires bands to make financial information public
First Nations bands have until midnight tonight to submit information about their finances to the federal government or they risk losing funding, Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt said, clarifying earlier communications that had said the deadline was last Friday.
As of Aug. 28, more than a third of First Nation communities had not posted the information as required by the First Nations Financial Transparency Act.
Under the law, which came into effect last year, First Nations have to submit their audited financial statements for the past fiscal year to the Canadian government.
