At least one military purchase would be scrubbed if the federal Liberals get elected to power next month.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau says he would scrap the Conservatives’ planned multi-billion-dollar purchase of F-35 fighter jets.

He told supporters in Halifax he would direct the cash instead to the Royal Canadian Navy and to shipyards in Halifax and Vancouver.

Prime Minister Harper says by not replacing the military’s C-F-18s, the Liberals aren’t serious about keeping Canadians safe. (5)

A new report has put a price tag on aging in Canada.

Commissioned by the Canadian Medical Association, the Conference Board of Canada study says it would cost the federal government 3.3-billion dollars in the next year to implement three strategies to cope with the wave of aging baby boomers.

In five years, the costs would jump to 17.5-billion as boomers put an increasing strain on the health-care system.

The first strategy recommends giving provinces extra money for health care based on the age of their populations.

The second reform would be full coverage of medications for all households spending at least 15-hundred dollars per year on drugs, and the third is to make two key caregiver tax credits refundable. (5)

What was supposed to be a day of celebration for members of southwestern Ontario’s Kettle Point First Nation was marred when the brother of slain protester Dudley George was seriously burned.

Kettle Point members were holding a four-kilometre walk yesterday from their land near Sarnia to a former army camp that’s scheduled to be returned to the band in a new deal with Ottawa.

Some descendants of 16 families from the camp lands set a protest fire in front of the gatehouse to show that not everyone is happy with the agreement as it’s written.

Witnesses say Pierre George was pouring more gas on the fire when flames rushed up his arms to his chest and head.

His brother Dudley was shot dead by a police sniper during a protest at nearby Ipperwash park in 1995.(5)

(UN-Iran-Nuclear)

The U-N nuclear agency says Iran has met agency standards, after it gave samples today from its Parchin military site to U-N nuclear inspectors.

Parchin is where Western nations have suspected that Tehran once worked on detonators for nuclear weapons.

Today’s assessment will feed into the larger July nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers, helping to determine whether sanctions will be lifted. (5)

(BIZ-Volkswagen)

Nearly 17-billion dollars (US) was wiped off the market value of Volkswagen AG today following revelations that the German carmaker rigged U-S emissions tests for about a half-million diesel cars.

Volkswagen’s market woes in Frankfurt come following a weekend that saw the company’s reputation seriously damaged by revelations from the U-S Environmental Protection Agency that it had skirted clean air rules.

V-W could be fined more than 18-billion dollars. (5)

(Pope-Cuba)

Pope Francis flies to eastern Cuba this morning for the next leg of his pilgrimage.

Yesterday, the pope met with Raul and Fidel Castro and held Mass at a church in Havana.

He’ll travel to Washington D-C tomorrow to begin a U-S visit. (5)
