#EmbraceEquity – International Women’s Day
March 8, 2023
The following statement is being issued today by Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe:
Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day. It is a day to reflect on the significant contributions all women and girls, of all ages and walks of life, play in society, as well as to raise awareness and to advocate for gender equity.
Labrador Inuit women have always played a critical role in our society, and have always been respected for their wisdom, insights and strength in achieving positive change.
More than ever, Labrador Inuit women and girls are pursuing their aspirations by achieving higher educations, by being actively involved at the community and political levels, and by empowering others in the ongoing fight for gender parity.
As a society, we should make all efforts to ensure we #EmbraceEquity, which is this year’s International Women’s Day campaign theme. It’s not about equality. It’s about inclusion and belonging; about challenging ourselves to accept the fact that equal opportunities simply aren’t enough. It’s about creating an all-inclusive society.
Let us take some time today to reflect on the struggles and barriers women and girls have faced, and continue to face in all aspects of society, and realize that together we can tear down barriers and create a future where inclusivity is not a dream, but a reality.
As we acknowledge this day, let us celebrate the strength, resilience and power of women and girls everywhere – now and into the future.
