Cheers to former Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart for his appointment to the National Capital Commission which looks after key national properties in Ottawa. It wasn’t the federal appointment he might have preferred – Prime Minister Stephen Harper hasn’t filled any Senate seats for several years and P.E.I. has an opening – but it still puts an Island presence on this important body. Mr. Stewart served 29 years as Summerside mayor and is a former national president of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities. He is certainly qualified for the job – and his political Conservative pedigree probably helped.
Cheers to Vector Aerospace Atlantic for renewing a 15-year lease for its facility at Slemon Park in the former CFB Summerside airbase. Vector is the major player in P.E.I.’s aerospace industry and employs more than 440 workers, making it one of P.E.I.’s largest employers. Federal and provincial loan support announced Thursday helped sweeten the deal but it’s money well invested. The news is also a major economic boost for the city.
