Charlotte Denny – Culture Gives us Identify
For CBU student Charlotte Denny, celebrating Aboriginal History Month is a time for reflecting on where the Ilnu people have gone and where they’re going.
“Culture gives us an identity; to be Ilnu we have to practice, celebrate and pass on our identity to future generations.”
Currently a second-year BSc Engineering Technology student with a concentration in Environmental Studies, Charlotte feels she made the right choice attending university close to her home in
Eskasoni First Nations.
What started out as a place to further her education has become more than she expected; CBU’s diverse culture and welcoming atmosphere has introduced Charlotte to a world of new people and new experiences.
“I get to meet so many people from all over the world, in my own backyard.”
Although Charlotte’s future may be geared towards the sustainable environmental development – she feels it’s important to recognize that learning about Ilnu histories and traditions can and should take place outside the month of October. “CBU offers a BA in Mi’kmaq studies and has been offering in community programs since 1990. Since then, CBU has graduated over 500 Mi’kmaq students.”
