The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Call to Action number 62.1 was to make an ‘age-appropriate curriculum on residential schools, Treaties, and Aboriginal peoples’ historical and contemporary contributions to Canada a mandatory education requirement for Kindergarten to Grade 12 students.’
The provincial government has committed to this goal, stating in the Action Plan for Education ‘the language, history, and culture of Acadians, African Nova Scotians, Gaels and Mi’kmaq, including Treaty Education’ will be included in the Primary to Grade 12 curriculum. That said, a ‘Report Card’ from the ecumenical group KAIROS maintained there is ‘significant work required’ for the province to meet the goal.
