Mawio’mi – it means “gathering” in Mi’kmaq culture, and signifies one of the most important community events for our region’s founding peoples.
For six years now Dalhousie, with the leadership of the Dalhousie Native Student Association, has hosted an annual Mawio’mi (or “powwow”), bringing together both native and non-native individuals to embrace the practices and history of the indigenous peoples of Halifax. This year’s Mawio’mi began with a flag-raising ceremony on the Studley Quad, featured a traditional meal and continued with drumming and dancing all afternoon in the Studley Gym. Photographer Nick Pearce was there to catch the celebrations.
