Cape Breton University was honored on December 3, 2015, with a Vital Cape Breton Excellence Award for being a driving force behind employing youth in Cape Breton.

“We are delighted to receive this Vital Cape Breton Excellence Award,” says Dr. David Wheeler, President of CBU. “The contributions that CBU’s youth workforce provides are invaluable. From their fresh perspectives to their strong work ethic, the young professionals that work hard for CBU play a prominent role in making the CBU community strong, so we are thrilled to be recognized as an employer who creates a rewarding work environment.”

The Vital Awards celebrate young entrepreneurs and community leaders from across Cape Breton and Mulgrave between the ages of 16 and 40 who have made a vital difference in their communities. In addition, the Vital Awards recognizes employers who create employment in rewarding work environments.

Dr. Wheeler adds, “For more than 40 years we have been offering our students experiential learning opportunities, with many of these work experiences happening right here on the CBU campus through research engagement, our work study program and co-operative education. Such opportunities enhance students’ learning experience and provide them with skills to confidently enter the workforce.”

Also honoured at the ceremony were Mary Beth Doucette, Executive Director of the Purdy Crawford Chair in Aboriginal Business Studies, for being vital to the Mi’kmaw community and CBU International Student, Ammar Tayeb for advocacy and volunteering.

This was the second year for the Vital Cape Breton Excellence Awards, an initiative of the Cape Breton Partnership
