What recession? Joe Oliver says in U.S. interview that there was no downturn in Canada

TORONTO _ Canada’s finance minister says Canada is not in recession now and wasn’t in recession in the first half of the year despite economic data showing otherwise. Retail sales up 0.5 per cent in July

OTTAWA _ Statistics Canada says retail sales rose 0.5 per cent in July to $43.3 billion, helped by higher sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers and clothing and clothing accessories stores. Sales were up in six of 11 subsectors, representing 55 per cent of retail trade. By Craig Wong.

Volkswagen shares slide again on deepening scandal

BERLIN _ Shares in Volkswagen AG are heading south for a third consecutive day as the automaker scrambles to contain its widening emissions-rigging scandal.Volkswagen’s share price fell 4 per cent to 101.75 euros in early Frankfurt trading Wednesday. U.S. index futures positive, loonie steady

TORONTO _ The Canadian dollar was steady and U.S. index futures were positive ahead of the North Amercian stock market open.The Dow Jones industrial futures were up 52 points at 16,281.0, the S&P 500 futures advanced 5.3 points to 1,937.4 and the Nasdaq futures gained 15.2 points to 4,282.5.
