CHARLOTTETOWN – The P-E-I government says it is considering a free tuition model for university education after other provinces introduced similar programs.
Advanced Learning Minister Richard Brown says research began soon after governments in Ontario and New Brunswick announced they would help lower-income students with tuition.
Responding to questions in the legislature yesterday, Richards said they are analysing the programs to see how those provinces are managing them.
In New Brunswick, it applies only to students whose family income is less than 60-thousand dollars.
The Ontario government announced in February that it will cover tuition for students from families with incomes of 50-thousand dollars or less.
Brown says he has been meeting with student unions and discussed the issue of parental requirements on student loans.
