HALIFAX – The C-E-O of the Workers’ Compensation Board in Nova Scotia says he’s concerned about a spike last year in the number of nursing home workers injured by violent residents.

Stuart MacLean says 40 nursing home workers received compensation for injuries in 2015.

That’s up from 28 the year before.

He says the trend is – quote – “disturbing.”

MacLean says there has to be a focus on workers’ safety.

His comments come just days after the chief medical examiner confirmed there were eight deaths due to resident-on-resident violence in Nova Scotia nursing homes since 2008 _ five more than previously reported.

A Health Department spokesman says occupational health and safety inspectors are increasing their visits to long-term care facilities.

He also says the Workers’ Compensation Board will hire a consultant to develop a plan to address health-care injury rates.
