HALIFAX – The son of well-known civil rights leader Marcus Garvey will be speaking in Halifax today as part of a speaker series for the Decade for People of African Descent.

Julius Garvey visited Cape Breton yesterday, where his father delivered a speech in 1937 that helped inspire Bob Marley lyrics.

He said: “We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery… none but ourselves can free the mind,” which Marley paraphrased in 1980’s “Redemption Song.”

The younger Garvey said the message of the speech and song still ring true today.

He says we have a long way to go in terms of understanding ourselves as human beings and our relationship with the universe.

Garvey says Marley read a lot about his Jamaican father, and the speech in Nova Scotia in 1937 was likely part of that reading material when Marley wrote Redemption Song.

The younger Garvey also toured a museum inside the Glace Bay hall of the Universal Negro Improvement Association _ which his father founded in 1914.
