HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s budget promises include modest amounts for a series of spending initiatives, many of which were previously announced.

One of the more notable is 6.6 million dollars to improve the childcare system.

A report released last month says the system employs the lowest paid early childhood educators in Canada.

The government says the money will be used to improve wages and subsidies to parents, although the amount of the increases won’t be released until Education Minister Karen Casey gives her official response to her department’s report within the next week.

C-U-P-E Nova Scotia president Dianne Frittenburg says the overall funding figure falls short of what workers in the sector expect.

She compares it to the 10.2 million dollars included in the budget to refloat the Yarmouth to Portland, Maine ferry and says while the ferry is important, childcare should be on an equal footing.

Premier Stephen McNeil says the amount is the result of choices the government has to make as it remains conscious of living within its means.
